The whole municipality is comprised of 73 villages and hamlets. It was first mentioned in the 8th century when Pope Gregory III refers to the monastery of St. Mary from Barban. During the Middle Ages, Barban was a feudal estate of Aquileia Patriarchate operated by the Gorizia-Pazin counts. After the death of the last Gorizia-Pazin count Albert IV, Barban fell under the rule of the Habsburg monarchy. In the 16th century, it belonged to the Venetian Republic and famous Venetian family Loredan. At the beginning of the 19th century, Barban once again belonged to the Austrian Empire and finally after the Second World War, together with entire Istria has become part of Croatia. In Barban are many interesting historical monuments, churches and Glagolitic inscriptions. Distinguished are 4 churches, remains of city walls, city tower with wide walls, the town loggia, and Loredan palace from the 17th century.
