Cavtat is located on the peninsula Rat 15 km south of Dubrovnik and it is the only urban center of Konavle, the southernmost municipality in Croatia. The original city was founded by the Greeks in the 6th century BC under the name of Epidaurus, which was an important Roman colony in this region, however, after coming of the Slavs to this area it lost its importance. During the Dubrovnik Republic, Cavtat was the second most important port, commercial and administrative center after Dubrovnik.
