The Euphrasian Basilica, a symbol of Poreč and Istria, is one of the best-preserved monuments of Byzantine art in the Mediterranean. The basilica was built in the 6th century during the rule of emperor Justinian I and bishop Euphrasius I after whom it was named. Over the centuries, the basilica was upgraded and got characteristics of different architectural styles. Today's appearance is largely characterized by Gothic style, built between the 13th and 15th centuries. One of the greatest treasures of the basilica are the mosaics of Christ, the martyrs and the Virgin Mary on the throne, which despite many earthquakes and fires have remained preserved until today.
